Moving the studio from a downtown warehouse location to a garage for storing and then finally into a newly built structure at home became a tremendous journey. For those thinking about doing this I encourage you to plan carefully and have a temp location to set up in while what was supposed to be 2 months of construction becomes almost a year.<br />
<br />
However the end result is fantastic and my work is showing what additional hours can do as well as having a room of my own:)<br />

All this to say I can update this blog now and get on with some thoughts about art making:)monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-23975175994216409982011-03-16T17:10:00.000-07:002011-03-16T17:40:42.403-07:00GOING , GOING, GONE!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvXudBw0LOKFqcW97hNGovah4rWlU8JtpAwqnQEObEqiG9qE32ur6TOLw00LOoWixgk8M5nd32iuXuE_S1ETs6KzHw82LwQ-kpfltKenbVJkC1OthHMt0nqTMOpId3A917_7k5ChQhyRxu/s1600/fig+canvas+work+3%253A16%253A11.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 272px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvXudBw0LOKFqcW97hNGovah4rWlU8JtpAwqnQEObEqiG9qE32ur6TOLw00LOoWixgk8M5nd32iuXuE_S1ETs6KzHw82LwQ-kpfltKenbVJkC1OthHMt0nqTMOpId3A917_7k5ChQhyRxu/s400/fig+canvas+work+3%253A16%253A11.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584834740555619858" /></a> It seems the figure I was working on evolved right off the canvas. Many times! It took two days of push and pull to get myself warmed up to letting go of calculations and pestering questions about right and wrong. This morning I walked in painted off the old efforts and simply put down the lines that do not carry a burden of pre conceived ideas. Tomorrow looks promising. <div><br /></div><div> In her book "The Creative Habit", Twyla Tharp says; "There's an emotional lie to over planning; it creates a security blanket that lets you assume you have things under control, that you are further along than you really are, that you're home free when you haven't even walked out the door yet."<br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-27671800474940400982011-03-09T17:20:00.000-08:002011-03-09T17:33:02.064-08:00FROM THE SKETCH TO THE PAINT<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmsoe6i7l8AcbG2jkFvqK5-_10GsPAYhsqZJrpAHe7Y_N2JRW2Ap1RIb3Lq-3yIBmqe95nFQ4cKd7hMhJ84EHB-ABIGP_lvmjtaEQ9njeKAci7CvPhVmaI3dS05HM3WYGY_sAlaRSIJRAP/s1600/fig+work+in+progress+%25232.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmsoe6i7l8AcbG2jkFvqK5-_10GsPAYhsqZJrpAHe7Y_N2JRW2Ap1RIb3Lq-3yIBmqe95nFQ4cKd7hMhJ84EHB-ABIGP_lvmjtaEQ9njeKAci7CvPhVmaI3dS05HM3WYGY_sAlaRSIJRAP/s400/fig+work+in+progress+%25232.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582255048794938450" /></a> I would be curious what other painters feel as they are about to take on the canvas with brush in hand. I have e-mails explaining the the project, my request for field time and some paintings as examples. Perhaps I need to go to the athletic departments with a brief portfolio. Their time and schedule must be quite precious right now. <div><br /></div><div> Meanwhile I am prepping canvases in anticipation of what's ahead.</div>monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-47048515055033916332010-09-03T12:29:00.000-07:002010-09-03T12:55:18.469-07:00DANCE OR SPORT?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAXlmd06B6DYPNJxsF79VPM_Rw4PtVfm3TvhNdVYJS_Hj624BNm7RBSht7XRvYmE4k0RARdlPbKqLz1XMgpRSfwc-seJvBIblyegp5JepUEITogxxA5_xOsDFwwfgnpNkV3YktkubBp1Eu/s1600/BLOG+GESTURE.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAXlmd06B6DYPNJxsF79VPM_Rw4PtVfm3TvhNdVYJS_Hj624BNm7RBSht7XRvYmE4k0RARdlPbKqLz1XMgpRSfwc-seJvBIblyegp5JepUEITogxxA5_xOsDFwwfgnpNkV3YktkubBp1Eu/s400/BLOG+GESTURE.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512771936545861378" /></a><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Seems like it has taken years for me to come to the exciting project of painting a series of canvases that have to do with the idea that dance and sport have similar gestures and come under the concept of movement as being composed of force, time, space and flow.<div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>My first task at hand is to line up opportunities for getting on the playing fields of football,volleyball, soccer and tennis during practice to sketch as close as I do in the dance rehearsals I'm attending now. The gesture of the female figure on the left did not work in this composition .</div><div> On a studio errand yesterday the image of the figure that I needed came to me. Maybe I should repeat that same errand tomorrow before adding color and features to hopefully move her and the viewer.</div>monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-90515201949093765742010-07-22T16:39:00.000-07:002010-07-22T17:00:50.363-07:00CELEBRATION TIME COME ON!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKpZpvwQJjyH9CPAchWudaduesgJpESphaDLkdWO66jMYOvKFhYVVqwLk0g1sNcnw3XzyhXSD8Yn7wJoJAF7D1jQojBcYvJ0GLDX_Qt1PZBeBKMpwiKxi2nI6mrY1MX1qxhDslDScCfxu/s1600/FIRST+SUMMER+BEAQUET.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKpZpvwQJjyH9CPAchWudaduesgJpESphaDLkdWO66jMYOvKFhYVVqwLk0g1sNcnw3XzyhXSD8Yn7wJoJAF7D1jQojBcYvJ0GLDX_Qt1PZBeBKMpwiKxi2nI6mrY1MX1qxhDslDScCfxu/s400/FIRST+SUMMER+BEAQUET.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496879646991984914" /></a> What better way to announce I am back from a year sabbatical than flowers in season.<div> This year long sabbatical has provided the time needed to convalesce from surgery and creative fatigue.</div><div> The Northwest Dance Project NWDP, has provided me with notes to launch new works. I can feel it now. sketch pad in hand and crow calling, crow landing, crow flying with mate, crow eating , crow, crow crow! </div>monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-15577274760729935922009-04-23T11:03:00.000-07:002009-04-23T11:17:06.072-07:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGBkDHiA9Y8ynt2G8zZIQbBBDcZqnAE6_tj_304o_6DXlzk9eUZ1ozVMrVZphbzfduGpnU1JjrGj0M7WHnGNQxaj2-5LL8ZWj2Tu5gN1skmwKSraJOnkO9Pr-031hAz50eg-CX9eqw84-/s1600-h/westview+hs+photo+4-22-09.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGBkDHiA9Y8ynt2G8zZIQbBBDcZqnAE6_tj_304o_6DXlzk9eUZ1ozVMrVZphbzfduGpnU1JjrGj0M7WHnGNQxaj2-5LL8ZWj2Tu5gN1skmwKSraJOnkO9Pr-031hAz50eg-CX9eqw84-/s400/westview+hs+photo+4-22-09.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5327952536180542802" /></a><br />Time spent being out in the community does cause some studio strain and yet I have found that being out among interested adults and school populations has been rewarding. As I shift back into my work routine there is an added enrichment to what I do as well as a feeling of being fortunate enough to do it. Yesterday I spent the afternoon at Westview High School in Beaverton for a Career day event as one of many speakers. It was fun to talk about art as a career choice and to see so many students attend the session. Hopefully that gained something that will make their journey easier. monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-34649429283792669362009-04-15T15:01:00.000-07:002009-04-15T15:19:21.048-07:00Vines and Lines<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh83ct-SrMfLnBZ6qRwG0ZIpHdzQEE5UDe_GBJK4_S7gmo8kQOCSvMecJ8Xe5zXqbEW0_q5zi3N1FEjYbFGtOYb8_JxHGGc1SgzyB2Mv0aTRWztb2Puc8x2v8BncVMb9YOspg8UTwjsTZ5T/s1600-h/Cordell,+Mona_I8Q9198-SMALL.jpg">The second Thursday of each month I am teaching how to draw the figure in an hour session that includes a glass of french wine and low impact instruction with results. As I read other blogs of artists it is amazing to see the variety of topics for inspiration. We are everywhere! Looking at cows, cowgirls, trees, stumps, shacks, barns and long streets. Lucky us.<div><br /></div><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6sTZD0y1R3J6mNUEJdPoGFpNVchsDUFi_Rx4G6o32iF_IUZ8JbQQCvs6_DJNr14ZDPENs6zMsTlGy5xEPHifQOiJZpiBQ98BM64IzdwxyVJed8yJGX5ZNjwalWvYjWcmxSy3H1wq7D-e/s320/dance+gesture+%232+female+4-2-09.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322368529586784818" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKNSF9c5CixcuVV7Mwpn8NfdlV0Hj26zqRp-6Kb8tLpJNKik-r5PvoH0Q8w0pqDrRn7wk-ICX_SQONgpcqGF3Wg3C-9enn_JAgoLoB1EBQ4GMbbwaPCJPUz-FEEJkvsExLHAIcB4JTOoNu/s320/dance+gesture+female+4-2-09.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322368528995535890" /><br /></div>monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-273026143518232602.post-16483030122524045582009-03-30T22:21:00.000-07:002009-03-30T22:27:07.619-07:00Big and SmallIn her blog, painter, <a href="http://karinjurick.blogspot.com/">Karin Jurick</a> recently talked about how working on a small painting is a break from the more challenging work on a large canvas.<br /><br />I find the same kind of relief with windows that I often put on my large pieces. The one on this canvas in progress may or may not stay in the composition but it has served the purpose of a relaxing distraction. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5URifDKsISacqt05yFy5cWjdxwts8UY66_CC72lPU6GkH5JvIOTSCoRCHAiCzZlE875MUmk0VyhKtLGjKUWRELssExzKwZ4xQsjeemWBuOT2C4o66RRRgD3JGzLtbQqm-OwjFQPc_GdzL/s320/mona+pic.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319218934508983378" />monajonescordellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499956369264900009noreply@blogger.com1
