Big and Small
In her blog, painter, Karin Jurick recently talked about how working on a small painting is a break from the more challenging work on a large canvas.

I like the idea of shifting sizes or canvases or even subject matter to get a break, but I also like your idea of "windows" within a canvas: A chance for a break, but it could also contribute to the whole...not entirely separate so you are still engaged with and working on the original piece.
